The divine eye, also known as the divine-eye wisdom insight or divine-eye wisdom通. It enables one to see the forms of the suffering and joy of beings transmigrating through the six realms, as well as all the various forms and colors in the world, without obstruction. Among these, the three supernatural powers possessed by Buddhas and Arhats (the power of knowing past lives, the divine eye, and the power of exhausting the defilements) are the most supreme, and are therefore called the Three Clarities.

According to the Ullambana Sutra, Venerable Maudgalyayana used the divine eye to see that his mother had fallen into the realm of hungry ghosts, where her skin and bones clung together and she suffered continuously day and night. He therefore filled a bowl with rice and went to offer it to her, but because she was receiving the consequences of her evil karma, all the food transformed into flames.
