A monkey manager said that because the company was building a swimming pool, it needed to find someone who could swim to manage the pool and see what the pool could do for the company.

A fish said that it could swim and had also spent some time in swimming pools, so it was hired.

Because there was no swimming pool, the fish first climbed trees with the other animals. It climbed many trees and also helped take care of them.

By the end of the year, the swimming pool still had not been built, so the fish was taking care of trees in the swamp with the other animals.

When it was time to evaluate KPIs at the end of the year, the fish thought that it had originally been hired because the swimming pool needed someone who could swim. Since the swimming pool had not yet been built, it rated its own performance as average.

The monkey initially wanted to find fault, but ultimately could not find anything to criticize and said nothing.

Later, one day after returning from vacation, the monkey discovered that the fish had finished climbing a new tree and said: “How could you pass by climbing that tree? Who authorized it?”

The fish said that the team had a review process, and the animal responsible for reviewing it had approved it because there was no problem.

The monkey still refused to give up and insisted on looking through the records for evidence that the fish’s tree climbing was inadequate. When it could not find any, it said that the fish had climbed too many times.

As the end of the year approached and the year-end bonus was about to be paid, the monkey summoned the fish and said that because the fish had performed poorly while climbing a tree the previous day, its performance evaluation was a failure and it needed to go on a PIP.

Only then did the fish realize that the KPI was merely a tool for the monkey.
