光田醫療社團法人光田綜合醫院
Pros

Hospital health insurance claims clerk (no shift work)

1. Convenient and safe transportation. There are no large trucks, and if you leave early enough, you can definitely find a parking space for your scooter. (I haven’t gotten a ticket yet~) You can also take the bus, although you’ll naturally have to walk for a while.

2. You can clock in right at the deadline: 8:01 counts as late, so you can clock in at 8:00. There is a mobile app for clocking in online, and you won’t be watched if you enter the office a little later. However, most of the senior colleagues arrive early.

3. You complete your own work and won’t have to do other people’s work. (The senior colleagues all work very seriously and try hard to finish before 5:30 so they can leave on time.)

4. You don’t have to clean the toilets or take out the trash. The area outside the office is a common area, and there is a cleaning lady who maintains the environment and cleans the toilets. You only need to take your own trash to the garbage bin.

5. The team leader is very capable. You can ask whenever you don’t know something—the team leader is super impressive.

6. Someone will definitely train you, but many things can only be done more quickly after you build up experience.

7. It’s a good place to build up work experience, it’s easy to get hired, and you can learn things. Kuang Tien has a strong reputation. There are always vacancies; at least three new people joined this year. There are also vacancies in Dajia. If you have a better job opening available, please don’t choose Kuang Tien. You won’t know there are so many annoying rules until you’re hired and sign the contract.

8. You don’t need to type quickly. You most often press the number keys, entering medical record numbers with the keyboard.

9. Apart from not paying overtime, everything else follows the Labor Standards Act. For national holidays, you take another day off instead. The Chinese New Year holiday starts on New Year’s Eve and usually lasts until around the third day of the Lunar New Year (not guaranteed).

10. For mailings, register them in the company system and hand them to the person in charge; you don’t need to go to the post office yourself, etc.

11. If there is a problem with the computer equipment, the IT department can help deal with it. Contact the IT department for system problems as well.

12. Work hard to obtain professional certifications. Each month, a certified health insurance claims specialist receives an additional NT$1,500; for a health insurance claims clerk, I’m not sure whether there is an allowance; a medical records manager receives an additional NT$750; a disease classification clerk, NT$2,000; and a disease classification specialist, NT$3,000. The salary increase is capped at two certifications.

13. Purely clerical work: Excel, answering phones, using the hospital system, scanning, and printing.

14. You can register to see a doctor during working hours without paying the registration fee. (Since overtime won’t be paid, it’s also fine to use working hours to see a doctor.)

Thoughts: When there are other decent job openings available, absolutely don’t choose Kuang Tien. Damn it, I only found out about the company’s many rules after being hired and signing the employment contract. At the time, I thought that because of the convenient transportation and the possibility of getting certified and receiving a raise at Kuang Tien, I could earn the same monthly salary as working downtown. I was being far too optimistic. People without a related degree have to work there for a year before they can take the certification exam. During the interview they said overtime was uncommon—well, just take that with a grain of salt. Of course, if you’re someone who is always in a frantic rush, this place might be perfect for you~ I’m seriously unlucky. After receiving Kuang Tien’s job offer, I thought for a while after learning that the health check would cost around NT$1,400, then agreed to work there. Only afterward did I receive a job offer from downtown, and I still regret agreeing to Kuang Tien first 📎📎 You must have a lot of dissatisfaction if you’re going to leave, but you still have to come work here yourself to know whether it suits you. All I can say is that the senior colleagues are genuinely super nice~

Cons

Kuang Tien was finally fined this year, on 111/09/16, for failing to pay wages for working hours, in violation of the Labor Standards Act.

1. The old-fashioned boss’s “responsibility system”: no overtime pay.

2. HR will say: To apply for overtime pay, you need a work assignment form. But you absolutely will never get a work assignment number.

3. Your supervisor will tell you directly: It’s a responsibility system, so there is no overtime pay.

4. Don’t be fooled by the promise of raises for certifications. You can receive increases for at most two certifications. The two most difficult certifications offer the highest raises (NT$3,000 for a disease classification specialist and NT$2,000 for a disease classification clerk; only after adding these can your monthly salary reach around NT$30,000). During the interview, they will tell you that you have to pay the certification maintenance fees yourself. Graduates of non-medical programs have to work for a year before they can take the certification exam.

5. After becoming a full-time employee, you are bound for two years. Otherwise, you can resign by repaying a prorated share of the uniform cost, and you must give three months’ notice.

6. Your monthly salary won’t increase because you become more senior or work faster. It stays at NT$25,500, although it will rise along with the minimum wage under the Labor Standards Act. Those of you in 2023 are in luck.

7. NT$100 is deducted every month for the welfare committee fee. After one year, you receive NT$500 as a birthday gift. I don’t know the other details.

8. Of the NT$25,500 monthly salary, NT$600 is electronic payment credit that can only be spent at Kuang Tien: NT$300 at Kuang Tien’s 7-Eleven (full-time employees in uniform receive a discount), and the other NT$300 at Kuang Tien’s restaurant.

9. If you don’t start work at the beginning of the month—for example, if you start on Monday, October 3—you’ll receive even less pay. It is calculated as 25,250 × 29/31, then NT$934 is deducted for labor and health insurance, and NT$100 for the welfare fund, leaving an actual take-home pay of NT$22,588.

10. There are education credits every year. They are important: if you don’t complete enough, your year-end bonus will be deducted. I heard it’s NT$250 per credit. Some are online courses, or are held during the lunch break. New employees have online courses for new hires.

11. Two meetings are held during lunchtime each month. Lunch is from 12:00 to 12:30 for half an hour, but team meetings can run until 1:30 p.m., so you can forget about taking a nap. Study groups may or may not run until 1:00 p.m.; there is also another 30-minute break. ((Naturally, meetings are unpaid!))

12. A stingy company: The company sets limits on departmental expenses (such as the photocopying quota), so you have to scan documents first and then use the computer to print them, which saves photocopying costs.

13. There’s quite a lot of work! You scan documents very often.

Supervisory-level employees voluntarily work overtime at least three days a week.

14. If you’re too difficult and unwilling to work overtime voluntarily, you’ll be “watched.” For example, you may be told that you haven’t reached the required number of medical records to scan, even though you leave work punctually at 5:30.
