I recently interviewed with the CIO and their HR team. HR got back to me today, and my overall impression was not very good. The first interview was held on Teams, and the second was in person at the company. Both conversations were quite long, and I felt that I was practically going to receive an offer. We briefly discussed salary during the first interview. The CIO said there was essentially a guaranteed 14 months of pay, but since it would not be written into the contract, she asked me to think it through carefully from a monthly-salary perspective. The CIO also said that if my salary range exceeded HR’s compensation approval level, she could directly approach the general manager to negotiate and make the decision. She spoke as though she had a high degree of autonomy and could bypass HR. So, when I went to the second interview last Friday, I raised my expected salary based on the monthly salary. The CIO replied that they could offer somewhere in the middle, approximately my expected salary minus 3,000 to 8,000. I felt that was acceptable. We also discussed that, because the commute is relatively long, she could accept a flexible start time of 9:30 a.m. at the latest. Regarding the start date, she preferred November or February, but said that starting after the Lunar New Year could also be discussed, including ways to coordinate on interim projects. She was willing to wait for a good candidate. But two days later, HR got back to me and said that flexible working hours were not possible, while insisting that I start before the end of the year and refusing to let me finish receiving my year-end bonus before joining… They asked me to assess whether I could accept this, but refused to provide the approved salary. How am I supposed to evaluate it!? This is a very important factor, okay!? After I asked them to provide the approved salary first so I could evaluate everything together, they replied in the afternoon—13K less directly!!? So everything the CIO had previously promised—the flexible start time of no later than 9:30, coordination of the start date, and the salary offered—was completely rejected and reversed by HR today!! When I asked about the CIO’s position, it seemed to have changed to “HR has the final say”… They said it was unlikely that I could demand a high salary, start late, and wait until after receiving my year-end bonus to join, as if I wanted to have it all. That’s ridiculous. Of these three points, which one did you actually agree to or coordinate with me!?? What exactly did I agree to!? The salary alone is 13K less than what the CIO promised! Are you messing with people!?? If HR has the final say on salary approval, then what exactly is the CIO there for—just to have fun??
