Before the interview, I spent an hour taking a personality test, completing a Chinese typing test, and filling out my résumé. Because I had not provided the phone number of a supervisor from a previous company, I was also asked to provide it (???). Before the interview had even started, it already felt like I was going to undergo a comprehensive background investigation. Personally, I don’t mind filling in information beforehand, since it can save time during the interview and, if I’m clearly unsuitable for the position, I can be eliminated directly.
During the interview, it felt as though the interviewer had not looked at my portfolio at all. They kept asking questions about experience unrelated to the responsibilities of the position, as if they thought they were the most capable person and everything I said was wrong. When I tried to elaborate and explain, they seemed only half-interested and kept talking back. Later, they took out several interview question sheets and read the questions aloud, such as: “What do your parents value most?” There were around a dozen questions of this type, even though I had already taken a personality test before the interview. When some of my answers were relatively ambiguous, they would directly respond, “That feels the same as not answering at all” (???). Finally, when we discussed my expected salary, they said that my requested amount was relatively high and might need further discussion. (The salary I requested was within the range listed on the recruitment website. If that is the case, they should not casually post that range on the website; besides, it was only an “expectation.”)
After the entire interview, I felt that a great deal of time had been wasted. If they were so unhappy with me, they could simply have declined to interview me. I also spent a lot of time filling out the information before the interview, only for them not to have even looked at my portfolio during the interview??? The interviewee also has to spend money and time traveling there. If I did not meet their requirements, they could have declined the interview at the outset or shortened the interview. The attitude they displayed during the interview was genuinely very uncomfortable.
