I had originally planned to interview during this period. The HR team had initially been scheduling interviews after 5 p.m., which I found very strange. Other companies I have interviewed with arrange interviews during normal working hours, but they kept insisting on scheduling after work, even as late as 8 p.m. When I told HR that I preferred another time, they finally offered a 2 p.m. slot. However, this made it seem that even if I went, I might still have to wait around for a long time, because the boss was very busy and constantly in meetings. Apparently, it would be fine if he was not punctual, because interviewees were expected to wait for him?

Also, I originally received a call from the HR manager at 9:30 p.m., which surprised me greatly. Even if a résumé says that the candidate can be contacted at any time, who would call a candidate close to 10 p.m. to notify them that they could come for an interview? (Under normal circumstances and according to common sense.) I already felt that something was a little strange at that point. In addition, they would occasionally imply that working overtime was routine. For example: “For the sake of the company’s overall operations, it’s perfectly normal for us to work overtime. The important thing is that the company becomes better, right? You agree, don’t you?”

There was also something HR told me that I was not particularly surprised by at the time, but looking back now, after seeing everyone’s accounts of what actually happens at the company, I feel that it was all true. HR told me that the reason they had contacted me about the position I was interviewing for was that the person who had originally started in the role quit after working for just one day! At the time, I thought, “How could they not handle it? It was only one day?!” But after reading the various accounts people have shared online about their experiences here, I now believe that leaving after just one day was actually a very wise decision for that person. I feel that, unless the situation is truly outrageous, most people would still try to endure it for at least a week or a month. But this person did not. How terrible must the situation have been for them to leave a full-time job on their very first day!
