They reviewed my résumé very quickly and emailed me the same day to arrange an interview time.

Although they reviewed my résumé quickly and invited me to an interview promptly, I thought they must be very proactive about recruiting. However, after I replied to the email, I still hadn’t received any news three or four days later. I thought perhaps I needed to call them myself. When I called, I found that the person responsible had clearly seen my email but hadn’t replied. I don’t know why. Later, after we arranged a time, they told me they would send me the interview link before the interview that day. However, there was still no message one minute before the scheduled time. I called again, and they only then told me they were busy in a meeting and apologized for delaying me.

The online interview then lasted nearly an hour. They questioned me about the fact that I hadn’t described the setbacks I encountered in my previous job specifically enough, saying they couldn’t tell what I had learned. It was an insecure part-time job with low pay, and doing well was not even guaranteed to lead to a full-time position. After that, they added another written test that lasted nearly an hour because they thought my answers about my work experience were not good enough. They also asked whether I would be willing to complete an additional assignment. In the end, they didn’t tell me anything about the details and simply sent me a rejection without any explanation.

Honestly, how high your expectations are for an ordinary-wage part-time job is your company’s business. But if you think an applicant is unsuitable, or if you were never seriously looking to hire someone, just say so directly. Don’t arrange a time and then ask a bunch of questions, only to say nothing if you’re dissatisfied. Don’t ask whether I’m willing to do an additional assignment and then provide no further information. It leaves a very bad impression. If we’re not a good fit, don’t waste each other’s time.
