Pros

The advantages of an overseas assignment are free meals three times a day, free accommodation, and, as I recall, a seven-day trip back to Taiwan once every two and a half months.

Cons

1. Each factory operates independently

The factory manager’s leadership style varies, and to a large extent determines how that factory operates.

The factory manager I worked under at the time was a traditional, old-school type. He liked drinking whiskey during holidays and festivals; if you didn’t drink until your glass was empty, he would get you blacklisted.

But even if you drank it all, if he didn’t like you, it was still completely useless, haha~

If you want things to go smoothly, you’d better know how to curry favor with the factory manager. Or, as the saying goes, connections mean everything—having connections really does let you live very comfortably.

2. There was absolutely no training before the overseas assignment; basically, you had to start from scratch and learn everything by yourself.

I recommend that anyone interested in an overseas assignment in garment manufacturing first develop a basic understanding of garment construction and the garment manufacturing process.

Going overseas only after that makes it less likely that you’ll break down. Otherwise, people without foundational knowledge can end up being overwhelmed and returning to Taiwan almost immediately.

3. The most difficult part is still interpersonal relationships.

There’s no solution. Taiwanese people really do tend to engage in internal conflict, and this company was no exception. It’s best to hope that you don’t encounter bad colleagues,

but that’s the hardest part.
