Pros

The company’s cat is very cute

Cons

The boss watches the surveillance cameras every day like a madman, deducts an hour from our break, and only allows us five minutes to eat. This violates labor laws. They also require us to eat things that can’t be eaten with utensils, so my coworkers and I eat 7-Eleven rice balls and things like that every day. If you take a sip of water, the boss calls and yells, “Did I hire you to come drink water?

If a customer doesn’t want to buy anything, the boss calls the store and asks my coworker why the customer didn’t buy anything, making it sound like it was the coworker’s fault.

Whenever customers come into the store, if even one employee hasn’t spoken to them, don’t doubt it—the store will immediately receive a call. Once, five employees were all helping the same group of customers and had already introduced the products to them, but the boss didn’t know the five customers were together and called to chew us out. It felt incredibly unfair.

Every day, going to work with my coworkers felt nerve-racking. I was assigned to a store with a particularly unreasonable manager. The manager pulled out an entire book of phone models and told me to memorize it, then said there would be a test ten minutes later. Who could memorize that? It was clearly making things difficult for people.

When I joined, the interview made it sound like it would be easy to earn NT$50,000–60,000 a month, but in reality it was only a little over NT$20,000 or NT$30,000. They could deduct money for anything. No matter how hard or seriously you worked, it didn’t matter: whenever the boss felt unhappy or was in a bad mood, they would deduct all the money. Coworkers who slacked off terribly actually received more pay than those who worked diligently. Whenever someone reported a violation of labor laws, the company would change its internal policies and then tell the employees.

Working there eventually pushed me to the point where I nearly felt like I was breaking down.

My coworkers and I were ultimately very relieved that we resigned!
