I worked in event-based sales, where high performance bonuses were used to attract job seekers, but in reality, they were practically impossible to receive. At the time, I was told that I could earn as much as NT$7,000–8,000 in performance bonuses per event. After the event ended, I checked my bankbook and found only a few hundred dollars—less than NT$500. Our sales performance was actually not bad, and we often met our targets, but in eight or nine cases out of ten, the bonuses were taken by the full-time employees. (Department stores usually do better business in the evening, so the full-time employee would almost always have me work the morning shift while she worked the evening shift.) They also didn’t pay anything extra for the final day of dismantling the counter. (I asked around, and the usual rate for dismantling a counter is NT$500.)

During sales, we were constantly required to call out to customers, and we weren’t allowed to speak too quietly. They treated the department store like a traditional market, which made the employees at the neighboring counters extremely annoyed.

I was once sent to support another counter. Although it wasn’t far from my original counter, the full-time employee didn’t want to go herself and sent me instead, simply because that counter’s sales had always been poor. I worked the entire shift alone that day, with no one to train or guide me, and even had to ask someone from a neighboring counter for help (they used a different POS system). Naturally, sales were poor that day too, but at least we exceeded NT$10,000 because a customer bought quite a lot of things. When the full-time employee found out, her first reaction was: “Without that order, your sales could never have exceeded NT$10,000 today.” Hello? What does my sales performance have to do with you? Are you just upset because you didn’t get that order? Why don’t you mention how much bonus money you usually take away? Is money all that’s left in your brain?

In short, this company is truly awful. I couldn’t take it even as a part-time employee, so I imagine it must be even worse for the full-time employees.
