HR called me directly to invite me to interview for an R&D position. When I arrived at the company for the interview, they asked me to take an online test, and then someone who called himself a chef came out. He never even said his name, and immediately taunted me: “You have very little work experience. At most, we can offer you a little over 30,000.” (I had already worked for 7.8 years—how could that be called “no experience”?!). I told him that the company had advertised a salary of over 40,000 on the job bank, and that at a previous company I was also responsible for the handmade cookie division. Anyone who has worked in baking knows that cookies are the most, most, most, most... basic thing in baking. Would they expect someone with 30 years of experience as a head chef to interview for this position?!

They asked me if I had any questions. After asking three questions, I gave up. The answers were no different from not answering at all. This supervisor had absolutely no sense. First, he kept looking down on others, and I have no idea what he was being so arrogant about. He kept pushing down the salary and asked me to come in for a trial, scheduling it for another day. In fact, every company I had interviewed with before conducted the interview and trial on the same day, mainly so as not to waste each other’s time. The trial task was gluten-free cookies, so I seriously suspect they wanted to use the trial to help with their R&D.

I thought salary negotiations were between me and HR. Before the trial, I called HR to find out whether any other supervisors would be present that day and to ask about some other details. I wanted to understand the situation before deciding whether to go in for the trial, but the phone was effectively useless—I called five times and no one answered.

Although HR had a very poor reputation, I let that go because I only had brief contact with HR. But in terms of actual ability, this company is really not impressive. First of all, the cookies they bought eight years ago are exactly the same as the ones they have eight years later. Being interviewed by a chef with no R&D capabilities was a terrible experience, and even for the Mid-Autumn Festival, they merely reassembled the same cookies. They have made absolutely no progress.
