All my colleagues are nice.
I worked at this company for about one year and ten months.
For roughly the first year and a half, I thought everything was pretty good. It was great working hard and fighting alongside my colleagues!
A senior manager joined at the end of August last year. I initially looked forward to the manager leading us in a better direction. The manager moved very quickly, and as a subordinate, I kept doing my best to cooperate. However, this manager showed me that working hard does not necessarily lead to good results.
I remember that on December 27 last year, I received an email from the senior manager. I was the recipient, and everyone in our department was copied. It said:
XXXX
XXXXX is an e-commerce platform that operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. What we need are colleagues who are willing to strive alongside the company and give their all to drive the business and accomplish the mission, not people who are merely selling their time and simply walk out at 6 p.m. when their work is unfinished!
If you cannot accept this type of work, I strongly recommend that you make good use of the excellent opportunity to change jobs at the end of the year!
Starting today, please provide your work log before leaving work each day. Email it to your supervisor, XXXX, and c.c. me.
Regards
SXXXX
(Seriously: Since it’s an e-commerce business operating 24/7/365, does that mean employees don’t need to rest? Does the boss pay overtime?)
At the time, I was very curious about what had happened to make the manager so angry—saying that I was selling my time and telling me to take advantage of the opportunity to change jobs at the end of the year. So I provided records showing that I was still contacting suppliers after 9 p.m. the previous night about items my colleagues wanted to purchase, doing my best to fulfill the business development/PM role. What exactly had I done wrong?
The manager replied:
Xxx,
I cannot accept this level of work efficiency when it can take nearly two months just to follow up on one contract!
Please demonstrate the quality and attitude you should have at work, and show me that you are truly conscientious and taking responsibility every day.
Regards
Sxxxx
I was shocked to learn that this was all because of a supplier contract.
Regarding this contract, taking two months to get it back does sound like very poor efficiency. But I produced my contract follow-up records: I followed up eight times in November and ten times in December (an average of once every two working days)... Wait! Was I not being responsible?
In the end, I showed the supplier contact a screenshot of the senior manager’s message, and the contract came back very quickly.
Then the manager started talking to me about the company’s profitability targets and so on, telling me to stop being overly sensitive and to stop creating imaginary dramas.
I thought that what the manager was talking about was exactly the direction we had been working toward ever since we joined the company, wasn’t it?
But writing such a harshly accusatory email to me and copying our entire department, then failing to respond positively after I explained the situation and telling me to stop being overly sensitive and creating imaginary dramas—I genuinely felt that this manager was extremely disrespectful (I felt it was workplace bullying).
I don’t know whether it was because of this farce or something else, but the manager sent Legal and HR to talk to me. It ultimately ended with my dismissal. (To be honest, I did not want to stay under such a disrespectful manager. The manager was very emotional and frightening—an issue with a contract could turn into accusations that I was selling my time and should take the opportunity to change jobs.)
Since I was dismissed, which was less than five months ago, approximately 12–13 people have left! (There were about 24 people when I was there.)
It’s quite a shame. It was a great team: everyone communicated and coordinated well, and we could support one another. After this senior manager arrived, everything changed...
It’s hard to comment on the manager’s work abilities, but the platform seems not to have changed or improved to this day. I now don’t even dare recommend that my new company use my former company’s products. The senior manager was probably also the most disrespectful person I have ever encountered!
