Pros

I applied for a software engineer position. Although the listing on 104 stated that work experience was required, I am a recent graduate with no work experience, yet I still received an interview invitation. When I entered the company, the lighting was bright and the ceiling was high. There were around 20 employees. First, HR asked me to fill out some basic information, and then I was interviewed by the department manager. HR did not participate in the interview.

The interview was conducted one-on-one. At the beginning, the manager explained that the company mainly takes on contract projects, most of which are currently in the biomedical field. I was not asked to introduce myself. The first few questions were about my thesis, research project, and areas of expertise. Then, looking at my résumé and transcript, the manager asked which course I liked most, why I had failed that course, and about some of my personal educational experiences. I talked about how I had arranged tasks for a group presentation and how I solved problems when difficulties arose...

The entire interview lasted about 90 minutes and was conducted in a conversational manner. Later, the manager said that, for recent graduates, the company values whether they are motivated to improve and whether they can successfully work with the team on projects. I had a very pleasant conversation with the manager. I felt that the manager was easy to get along with, and the company as a whole gave me a positive impression.

Cons

Shouldn’t HR participate in the interview as well? I felt that the manager who interviewed me was still more focused on the work itself. It seemed that several times the manager wanted to explain something one way, but then suddenly felt that another explanation would be better and changed it after thinking it over. There were often a few minutes of silence that felt awkward.
