A week before I was due to start, they suddenly said they could no longer hire anyone because the budget was insufficient. Strange—if you didn’t have enough budget, why did you post the position in the first place? Do you enjoy treating people like idiots? You might as well have just said that a parachuted-in candidate was going to take the position. Otherwise, having an employment offer only gives people more room for speculation.

What’s more, a week before I was due to start, HR informed me that I didn’t need to report for work after all, claiming that the department’s budget was insufficient and that they could not hire someone without experience to work there. Then what you said initially was a lie. I had also stated during the interview that I had no experience. This is the first company I’ve encountered that was so lacking in integrity and treated job seekers like idiots.
