The work itself is research rather than development. Compared with jobs at ordinary companies, the work rules are highly flexible, and the institute has good recreational facilities.
The work content of outsourced contract employees is similar to that of regular employees, but there are major differences in leave, compensation, and other benefits. Contract employees receive only the leave required by the Labor Standards Act, and their job title is literally listed as “Other,” making them seem like ghost employees. There are quite a few such contract employees at the Industrial Technology Research Institute, both in research and administrative positions. Ironically, regular employees are not necessarily more capable—perhaps this is not surprising in today’s workplace.
