Cons

First, after arriving at the company, someone escorted me to a meeting room to wait. While waiting, I had to fill out the company’s standard résumé form. I personally dislike filling out this kind of company résumé form because, in addition to basic personal information, it asks for family circumstances, family members’ birthdays and phone numbers, as well as height and weight. For the experience section, I had to provide my compensation at the time and reasons for leaving. To avoid being questioned about every detail later, I filled it out truthfully, including my expected compensation.

Later, the interviewing supervisor came in and asked the usual questions about my past experience, as well as asking me to introduce myself in English. There was not much subsequent Q&A in English; I was only asked why I thought I was suitable for the position.

During the interview, I was asked several questions that I personally found extremely ridiculous, such as:

“How come you don’t work as a translator?” (Does majoring in foreign languages necessarily mean you have to become a translator?)

“Why do you keep choosing to work in the education-abroad industry?” (Why not?)

“How did you come up with this salary expectation?”

It was really laughable. My salary at my previous job was N, and at the job before that it was N+10—and that job was already five years ago. I can do much more now than I could back then, so what is wrong with asking for N+11 now? Besides, the salary I requested was within the salary range listed for this company on 104; I did not even ask for more than that!

This female supervisor seemed to think very highly of herself and had the typical employer’s mindset (the company gets to pick the employees). I personally did not like it. As the interview was about to wrap up, she even told me herself that the company benefits were clearly stated online, which implied that she did not intend to explain them further. I later asked whether this opening was due to expansion or someone leaving. The interviewing supervisor replied that someone had left and that they had been looking for someone for a long time. When I said that two months was already quite a long time, she actually replied, “Yes, because we haven’t been looking very seriously either.” (Honestly, I was speechless…)

Also, for a marketing position, they did not look at my copywriting samples but instead requested to see my translation samples. (I was completely baffled.)

In addition, this job mainly involves preparations before exhibitions, requiring a good command of English and a basic sense of aesthetics. (You do not necessarily need to know how to design, since the company has its own designer.)

After the interview, I had to complete written tests similar to an intelligence test and an aptitude test. The questions were not difficult. The entire interview process took about an hour.
