A family-owned business where the boss and the boss’s wife often argue, and their conflicts can spill over onto the employees.

In my first month, they issued my salary incorrectly, undercounting it by nearly NT$4,000. They also did not provide pay slips; they only started issuing them after the colleagues repeatedly asked and pushed for them. I don’t know whether they still do so now.

1. Excessive overtime, and everything is always urgent. The boss does not care how many projects you already have on hand.

2. Although I applied for a planning and design position, I mostly ended up doing graphic design and production work, and sometimes had to help with post-production processing.

3. They constantly dump projects on you, causing you to be unable to finish them and forcing you to stay late, but there is no overtime pay. When the workload was too heavy to handle even with overtime and I brought it up with the boss, the response was, “Then can’t you just work overtime?” I also had to take projects home to work on during holidays.

4. If you help with events on holidays, you only receive compensatory leave and no overtime pay. For one event, you may have to gather at 6:30 a.m. and stay until the event ends and cleanup is finished, at least until 9 or 10 p.m. During the event, you are expected to do everything: carry entire cases of bottled water, collect chairs, pick up trash, and so on. Even all the large garbage and grease left behind by vendors must be cleaned up by the company’s own employees instead of hiring a cleaning service.

5. The company’s hardware and equipment are not very good. Even making a slightly larger poster causes the computer to lag badly, and moving a single photo can take several minutes. When you are rushing to meet a deadline, who can wait that long? Old files are stored on an aging machine that is barely functioning; starting it up may take several dozen minutes, let alone the time it takes to open a file and find what you need.

6. Overtime usually lasts until around 9 p.m. to midnight, depending on how long you can hold out and whether the computer decides to cooperate.
