The company supervisor, Li Chaowang, sent me an email: “Starting Friday, I’ll be at the Kaohsiung Arena Travel Fair. You can bring your résumé to our booth and we can chat.”

I replied: “Hello, Mr. Li. I’ve received your message. I look forward to the interview on Friday. Thank you!”

When I arrived at the entrance of the travel fair that day, I had to pay a NT$100 admission fee to enter. I bought a ticket, entered the exhibition hall, and found their booth. I told them I was there for an interview. Mr. Li seemed not to remember me. I handed him my résumé, but he did not open it. He asked which position I was applying for. I said, “Tour leader.” He asked, “Do you have a tour leader license?” I said no. He said, “Then how can you be a tour leader?” (The job posting I saw said that having a tour leader license was preferred; it did not say that having one was required.)

I said, “Then why did you notify me to come for an interview?” He said, “I have to read more than 100 applications every day. How would I have the time?” I said, “You’ve wasted my time, and I also had to pay NT$100 for admission just to get in!” He said, “You’re the one who wasted my time.” I said, “How could I have wasted your time? Aren’t you here?” He said, “Where am I?” (He started talking in circles.) I said, “Here!” He asked, “Where is here?” I said, “At the travel fair!” He said, “I travel all over Taiwan!” I said, “You’re the one who emailed me and told me to meet you at the travel fair.” Sitting there with one hand supporting his head, he said, “So what? Are you asking me to apologize to you now?”

Angrily, I said, “Refund my NT$100 admission fee.” He took out his wallet, gave me the money, and continued supporting his head with one hand. As I stood up to leave, I said to him, “Also, I’m going to file a complaint.” He said, “Oh, you’re going to file a complaint.” After giving him an eye roll, I turned around and walked out of the venue.

I’m very fortunate that I didn’t end up working there, because they have an irresponsible supervisor!
