Pros

1. The office environment is quite good.

2. Most colleagues are easy to get along with.

Cons

1. There are no systems—no systems, no systems, no systems, no systems, no systems.

2. It is a responsibility-based system with no overtime pay; only compensatory leave is available, but requests for compensatory leave are not necessarily approved.

3. You must not be overly lively; you need to be extremely careful about what you say.

4. Procurement has no purchasing authority. After another department negotiates the price, it may suddenly decide after the order is placed that the price is too high and throw it back to Procurement for further negotiation. If you cannot negotiate it down, it is considered your lack of ability.

5. For items with long lead times—more than a month—they will give them to you two weeks before the deadline and say they are needed in two weeks. Or they may send you the files this afternoon and require the printed materials tomorrow. If you cannot do it, it is considered your lack of ability.

6. General Affairs is nominally General Affairs, but in practice includes General Affairs, procurement, payment applications, warehouse management, all repairs and replenishment of consumables for the company and all locations nationwide, inventory management, receiving goods, and more.

7. Procurement has no purchasing authority, and the system has no monthly account-settlement function, so you must manually prepare a table of vendors’ monthly settlement items.

8. Everyone habitually works overtime, so leaving on time makes you seem like an outsider.

9. General Affairs has no petty cash. Every month, you must advance at least NT$10,000 or more out of pocket and then request reimbursement from the company. (This has been requested many times, without success.)

10. Every month, you must spend a great deal of time sorting the stationery and consumable supplies requested by locations nationwide into separate boxes (there are many types of items and many locations). It takes one person two days, while four people can do it in half a day.

11. The company’s systems have been in place for more than 30 years. If someone says the systems can be changed, that absolutely means they are beautifying the truth—then beautifying it again and again. Be extremely careful.

12. General Affairs has so many miscellaneous tasks that it is common to be too busy to submit reimbursement requests, yet you still advance more than NT$10,000 every month. If you do not have time to submit reimbursement requests, it is considered a problem with your own time management.

13. General Affairs employees are busy every day until they leave work at seven or eight in the evening. Requests for compensatory leave may not be approved; if the work is not done well, it is considered your lack of ability.

14. Everyone protects themselves and pushes tasks onto others whenever possible. If you happen to join, remember not to be too helpful. Once you help, it will become something you are expected to do.

15. If a new employee does not start work on the first day of the month, NT$2,000 in perfect-attendance bonus is deducted immediately for that month.

16. There is no grace period whatsoever; being one minute late results in a deduction of NT$2,000 from the perfect-attendance bonus.

17. Salary structure: total salary = base salary + NT$2,400 meal allowance + NT$2,000 perfect-attendance bonus. During the interview or when notified of acceptance, be sure to clarify whether the salary approved by the interviewer is the base salary or the total salary.

18. Every month, General Affairs employees need to go to the company on one or two Saturdays to open the doors for cleaning staff or personnel performing maintenance work. They say you can request compensatory leave, but whether it is approved depends on whether you are favored or whether your perceived ability is good enough.

19. The General Affairs warehouse is unbelievably messy.

20. Senior employees have left behind quite a few problematic unpaid expense claims. If you cannot get them reimbursed, it is considered your lack of ability.
