In every workplace, there will always be gossip and people with sharp tongues.
I am still currently employed here. You may criticize the company’s strengths and weaknesses, but I really cannot stand people giving others random nicknames behind their backs. For example, “Old Princess” has worked here for nearly 25 years and is a senior colleague who deserves respect and whose experience we should learn from. This is simply basic courtesy between people.
That is what work is like: once you receive a salary, you do your job and accomplish the company’s goals. Looking at the new hires and employees who have left, they are indeed different from employees from several years ago. Even serving customers requires more patience and professionalism. As the boss said, the quality of personnel over the past two years has not been high, and their ability to learn has been poor. They watch dramas during work hours, and fall apart as soon as they are reprimanded.
If you frequently change jobs and your boss does not try to retain you when you resign, from the company’s perspective, perhaps your value to the organization is not very high.
I truly hope this company can continue to grow steadily. As a former employee once said, this is a company led by a very capable boss. The boss comes from the electronics industry and has the meticulous personality commonly associated with Virgo. His way of thinking about work differs from that of my previous boss. One person—the boss—can almost single-handedly achieve the company’s performance targets. When employees make mistakes, he also steps in to help handle them rather than leaving us to fight alone. The boss thinks clearly, and I have genuinely learned a lot since coming here.
To provide a balanced view of this company’s strengths and weaknesses for new employees’ reference:
Disadvantages:
1. The turnover among sales staff is indeed very high:
This seems to be the same situation at several travel agencies I worked for previously. I think this reflects the current reality of the service industry. The current boss has recruited employees from other industries, such as the airline and hotel industries. Their educational backgrounds are also quite good, and the company’s overall quality is higher than before. I hope these people can stay stable and lead the company’s growth.
2. The gossip never stops:
Ever since I joined the company, people have been saying that the company cannot pay its employees. In reality, the company has never been late paying me or any other colleague, not even by one day. In fact, when payday falls on a holiday, the company pays us early on Friday.
After so much gossip, the company merged with a travel agency that was established 30 years ago this year and opened a branch in Taichung. It is currently preparing to open another branch in Hsinchu, so I think many of the rumors will eventually stop.
Advantages:
1. Environment:
The Taipei headquarters was formerly a design company and has an industrial-style interior. The overall environment is quite good.
The Taichung office is a storefront. Although it is a small shop, nearly one million dollars was spent on its renovation. The boss said it would have a Nordic style, and it really does not look like an ordinary travel agency.
2. Benefits:
1. Free coffee is provided. I personally have a habit of drinking coffee at work, and this company provides a fully automatic coffee machine using Starbucks coffee beans. There are nearly 20 employees, so a lot of coffee is consumed. At least the boss is not stingy about replacing them with cheaper beans.
2. Sales staff who complete one full month of work get to travel abroad for an inspection trip. Meetings are held once a week, and one hour is spent reviewing performance.
3. The boss has never asked us to work overtime. However, travel agencies really do have a lot of miscellaneous tasks, and because of customer requests, we generally leave work half an hour to an hour late. If you come to this company, be prepared to leave work late.
4. Free accommodation is provided.
In June and July this year, two newly hired female sales employees from central Taiwan were living away from home. The boss thought that coming to Taipei alone would be difficult, so he kindly provided a three-bedroom house for them to share. It was also very close to the company, and water, electricity, and air conditioning were provided free of charge.
Unfortunately, one of the women suddenly stopped coming to work in August. She did not submit a resignation letter or hand over her work, and even asked other colleagues to help collect her belongings. Afterwards, she complained extensively. This made the boss very angry, but he did not withhold her salary. However, future employees probably will not receive this benefit.
Employees in Taichung currently receive this benefit. The boss provides accommodation, as well as a free garage, and all water and electricity costs are covered.
5. Last month, during a typhoon, the company suddenly announced in the afternoon that work would be suspended. The boss was considerate and allowed employees to leave an hour early. Later, the news reported that the MRT was extremely overcrowded. Even in small matters like this, you can feel that the boss is a good person.
The above is provided for people who are considering entering the travel service industry. This company has received top-level W Hotels and Banyan Tree certifications and agency rights for many years, so it still has ability and competitiveness. I think many colleagues will continue to stay with the company steadily.
I do not want to get involved in gossip. I hope the company does well, and capable people are welcome to join.
