Pros

‧Leave and arrive at work on time

‧Large, quiet, and clean office seating

‧Follows national holidays

‧R&D staff can change teams (but there are conditions... basically, almost no one changes teams)

‧Colleagues are easy to get along with (excluding the people mentioned above)

Cons

‧Heavy traffic during commuting hours (it normally takes 10 minutes to get to Songshan Train Station, but it becomes 30 minutes); the workday ends at 6:10, so you will definitely encounter traffic jams

‧Few places to eat nearby, and the hygiene of some establishments is questionable

‧Only nominally divided into teams; people work alone (due to the way work is assigned and insufficient staffing)

‧After changing teams, if there is an issue with a project from the previous team, they look at the “person,” not the “position,” so you will still be contacted about it (e.g., to put out the fire)

Advice for newcomers:

‧Don’t appear to be too capable. The more capable you are, the more work you will be given, with no upper limit

‧When developing new products, only do half of the work; wait for management to urge you before providing the other half, to avoid constantly changing priorities

‧It’s enough if the desired result is achieved; optimization and improvements are just busywork

‧Don’t study the predecessors’ code too seriously—it’s toxic, with lots of bizarre logic

‧Don’t believe too much of what management says, and don’t be fooled by appearances; there is a lot of spin

Advice from a senior cited on this webpage:

Basically, the more you do, the more mistakes you make; if you do nothing, you make no mistakes. Knowing how to shift blame and take credit is the way to survive.
