Pros

Vacations are easy to schedule, and most are arranged half a year in advance.

The employee benefits are good, including subsidies for continuing education and training.

Overall, the benefits are about 30% better than those offered by companies in Taiwan.

The company has a finely divided division of labor, so assistance can be obtained easily.

Cons

The starting salary is low, and overtime is common. You may be asked to cancel planned leave and come to work. In American companies, the culture places the customer first; when something goes wrong or there is a customer complaint, it is considered the service staff’s fault, and you may receive a warning and be required to write an improvement plan. There is almost no extra break time during working hours. Sick leave may result in demerits and a warning, although HR will tell you to take leave if you are ill. Field duties often involve work-related injuries; if you state that you were “injured at work,” you may receive a warning and be required to review the situation because your working posture was incorrect.

This is a company with a seniority-based system. Long-time employees always think newcomers have it easy. Performing too well may increase your workload. Don’t assume everyone is friendly toward you—you never know what they say behind your back. The company will not make allowances for you; the rules are the rules. Each year, rating supervisors only ends up making things difficult for them, and they are replaced by another supervisor who is just the same. The overtime policy should have changed recently. I heard that someone who worked more than four hours of overtime on a holiday received a warning and had to write a self-review report, with the reason given as insufficient work ability or deliberately failing to put in full effort.

The customer-service staff has been streamlined, and multiple routes may be consolidated into one. The work is more demanding than before, but the salary is much lower. If you want to train your physical fitness or improve your health—or develop impressive driving skills—you can give it a try. You need good English, preferably enough to understand business English and official documents, as well as attention to detail and high EQ. To stay for a long time, you need good relationships with people, the approval of your supervisors, and customers’ appreciation. Your salary will then increase, but there is a ceiling, and you will not receive more pay or leave than people in the past did.
