1.) Be among the first to know about promotions and special offers
2.) Develop emotional intelligence
3.) Learn how to handle difficult customers appropriately
1.) No employee discount (customers often pretend to be familiar with me and ask me to check them out using the employee discount)
2.) No overtime pay; a responsibility-based system (when the shift ends, someone will “helpfully” clock out for you)
3.) No free food, even if it is merely a damaged package (discarded products are destroyed or taken back by the supplier)
4.) No one to back you up (from management’s perspective, the customer is always right, while employees are treated as worthless)
5.) No raises (regardless of how many years you stay in the same position or how well you perform, you will not receive a raise)
6.) The performance evaluation system is unrealistic (even if a customer buys only one newspaper, you must ask whether they have a membership card and whether they need a plastic bag, while at the same time aggressively pursuing cashier efficiency)
7.) Business hours are unclear (even after closing time, you cannot ask customers to speed up their shopping; all employees can do is delay closing the store together)
Additional explanation of point four
Before I left the job, the tainted cooking oil scandal occurred, and several suppliers were implicated. The company and the suppliers both announced that only products officially identified by the government as problematic could be returned. However, some consumers had lost confidence in the brand and demanded refunds and returns, even when the products they had purchased did not contain the problematic ingredients. They would angrily shout in the store and demand that PX Mart, as the retailer, absorb these costs.
The store manager’s response was actually to require employees to apologize to customers for refusing refunds or returns and to accept customers’ demands unconditionally. This led to the story spreading from person to person, causing even more customers to come into the store to argue and make a scene.
