Pros

You can build strong bonds with your colleagues by enduring hardships together, and you might even find a boyfriend or girlfriend (after all, they’re your companions in staying up until dawn almost every day).

They feel so sorry for you coming home at 3 a.m. every day that you can use compensatory leave to cover being late, and they’ll give you a taxi voucher to take a cab.

Cons

The boss doesn’t treat people like human beings. The customer is always right: if a customer casually messages on LINE at 10 p.m. saying they need the materials the next day, you still have to produce them.

There is absolutely no training system, because the manager is also so busy—practically working all 365 days of the year—that they have no time to pay attention to or provide you with feedback.

Working on holidays gets you NT$500, while supervisors get NT$700, but the hours may run from meeting at 6 a.m. to returning to the office at 8 or 9 p.m. Oh, wonderful.

One person handling one project is perfectly natural; one person handling two projects is entirely reasonable; one person handling three projects means the boss appreciates you.

You do whatever the boss says, completely disregarding the manager’s warning that the company is understaffed. If someone asks a favor, you keep accepting, accepting, accepting; when you see a proposal, you keep writing, writing, writing (even if the tender closes in three days. Once, I stayed at the office for two consecutive days watching the sky get light, sleeping only three hours on the sofa).

Overtime pay? Of course not—only compensatory leave. But you can’t even take that, because you’re the only one handling the project; even when you’re on vacation, they still LINE you, call you, and hound you.

In summary: hell on earth.
