Pros

The largest vocational training center in central Taiwan—a great place to hone your skills during alternative military service.

If you train hard enough at Dayin while keeping a low profile, you may even get headhunted for a high-paying job.

Cons

Generally speaking, there is already a lot of information about this on the forum, so I’ll offer some points that are slightly different.

1. For two consecutive years, the company’s poor operating performance has resulted in everyone’s year-end bonuses being downgraded.

I heard that the average year-end bonus on the production line is less than NT$10,000, while R&D staff get only about 0.7 months’ salary.

Not to mention that performance bonuses have not been paid for a year; even the most recent payment was pitifully small.

2. Employees above a certain grade are forced to stand guard (morning, afternoon, and night shifts), watching over the factory and patrolling the premises.

They are given only a small amount of money, operating in a gray area of the Labor Standards Act. Once you are scheduled for duty, you have no excuse even if you get sick, and you cannot be late. At best, you receive two reprimands; at worst, a minor demerit or a major demerit.

3. The company emphasizes information security, but it does not have the money to buy good systems and purchased a half-finished product instead. It is constantly locking employees out of their own files, and files are often lost.

4. Recently, because the chairman ordered it, employees have been kept after work for meetings, which are categorically not counted as overtime, seriously affecting workers’ rights.

5. Insufficient overtime hours result in dismissal.

6. You have absolute and considerable control over projects because colleagues senior to you quickly resign—very quickly, until they are all gone. I heard that one department lost half its staff within a year; afterward, the company brought in large numbers of alternative-service personnel as disposable labor.

7. The company places great emphasis on employees’ moral education. Even traffic-law violations committed outside the company can be used as grounds for giving you two reprimands. It’s absolutely insane.

8. The company is very afraid of employees resigning and is unusually obsessed with proof-of-employment certificates (if they do not want to issue one, they simply refuse).
