Pros

After learning about the inner workings of KFC, you’ll avoid buying from KFC.

If the closing shift finishes quickly, you can probably spend about an hour getting paid for doing nothing.

When a small store is quiet, you can also get paid for doing nothing.

Double pay on national holidays.

Closing-shift employees can eat unsold food (at the manager’s discretion).

Cons

Management varies from store to store. Some stores are very strict, while others are very lax, so food quality also varies (this store belongs to the latter group).

The rules for taking leave are unclear. Most employees don’t know that they are entitled to paid leave. If you only tell the manager that you want to take sick leave, bereavement leave, or other types of paid leave, the manager will simply remove you from the schedule, and you won’t receive the wages you are entitled to. This is because the manager often doesn’t know how to process paid leave either. When I called HR myself to ask, HR told me that the store manager had to email headquarters before it could be processed.

Employee training is inadequate at some stores, resulting in different procedures at each location and frequent customer complaints.

The POS system is terrible and very complicated to use. The system does not calculate add-on prices automatically, so employees have to go to the add-on section and enter them manually. Many promotions are unknown even to the staff, often causing customers to spend more money.

Because the company is perpetually short-staffed, it hires indiscriminately. Some unethical shift leaders even put food that has fallen on the floor back into the warmer and continue selling it.

Products are also sometimes sold after their expiration time.

If an employee works seven consecutive days, they may be asked to clock in using someone else’s time card to evade labor laws.

A breeding ground for extremely unreasonable customers. Basically, employees have to satisfy whatever customers demand. For example, although the rules state that coupons cannot be used to request specific chicken parts, employees still have to agree if the customer keeps pressuring them. Example 2: On typhoon days, only the typhoon meal is supposed to be sold, but online ordering is not disabled. If a customer orders other items online, employees still have to prepare them, and so on.

Employee benefits are getting worse. Employee meals used to be 50% off, but now they are only 15% off; buying a combo is basically the same as paying the “super savings” price, so there is no real discount at all.

The delivery allowance is NT$8 per delivery, or NT$12 on rainy days. However, the system defaults to sunny weather, so you won’t know whether the management team manually entered the rainy-day rate before closing. In addition to deliveries, employees may also be assigned to transfer stock between stores; even though they have to go out, they receive no allowance.

The delivery scooters are terrible and very difficult to ride. Even when they break down, they are not repaired until they become impossible to ride. Riding in the rain still leaves you soaked, even while wearing rain gear.

Sometimes shifts are added or cut after the schedule has been posted, without notifying you.

Shift leaders have a huge number of responsibilities, but their hourly wage is only NT$9 more than that of service staff.

The pay is the same for every station, even though the duties and physical demands differ greatly.

In short, it may be a decent choice for people who do not have high expectations of their work environment and are content to muddle through. But if you have the opportunity to move somewhere better, you might as well leave.
