2015 overview of Daxun Technology, its industry, and prospects

Pros:

A typical family business. Its main customer, Supermicro, has stable orders and is the primary source of revenue. The operators of Daxun Technology and Supermicro are brothers. Supermicro is also a leader in the white-box server market and a publicly listed U.S. company, so there is not much risk in the short term (5–10 years). You start work punctually at 8:00 every morning, with no lateness or absences, and receive a fixed NT$1,500 bonus in addition to your regular salary each month (please clarify before the interview that this bonus is not included in the stated salary).

Cons:

The company has a strong bureaucratic atmosphere in every department and lacks clear communication channels, making it difficult to find the appropriate contact person. Many procedures rely on word of mouth. When problems arise, the only response is “follow company policy,” even though many policies or processes are unreasonable or inefficient. Senior management also lacks management knowledge and the mindset for reform. The company is extremely stingy: only employees with more than five years of seniority are eligible for the year-end raffle. The company stipulates a fixed number of overtime hours per month (starting at 20 hours), and overtime pay is calculated into the monthly fixed salary, so in reality there is no overtime pay. Even one day of sick leave requires a doctor’s certificate; medical receipts are not accepted, and otherwise the leave is treated as personal leave. The company’s procedures are traditional and inefficient. New employees do not have a computer available when they start and must submit their own request to the IT department. IT processing takes a long time, and after submitting the request, you have to wait one to three weeks before a computer becomes available. Related permissions, such as access to the ERP system or work software, require separate applications and involve similarly long waiting times. Sales staff must fill out an outing form whenever they leave the office, including when dining with customers. Performance is almost always subject to deductions, and the sales targets are unrealistic and impossible to achieve. The company treats its own employees like thieves: USB ports are locked, and computer permissions prevent employees from installing software themselves. The ERP system is outdated, has flaws in its logical design, is merely a formality, and lacks efficiency. The BOM is actually managed using the Windows folder system.

Work environment and culture:

The company’s core capability is the contract design and manufacturing of server chassis (ODM/OEM only). Simply put, it only knows how to make chassis—ONLY. It has its own factory but still operates with a contract-manufacturing mindset. This may not be a problem if it is merely providing contract manufacturing, but developing its own brand or entering new fields is impossible. The senior management support departments, such as auditing, finance, human resources, and general affairs, only know how to curry favor with the owner’s wife, like the Eastern Depot, and have no productivity whatsoever. Office staff are managed like factory workers.

Advice for management:

Transformation or reform requires the “boss” to “personally supervise,” become involved in understanding every matter, and make decisions. Simply leaving implementation to the existing management team will not bring about change. The owner’s wife should stop involving herself in so many matters; otherwise, all employees see is her harshness, stinginess, and the spectacle of people currying favor with her.

Advice for people currently looking for jobs:

If you want professional and career development, I strongly recommend that you do not join this company. If you have sufficient expertise, want to coast toward retirement, do not care about career prospects, and are a relative of the imperial family with strong skills in deflecting issues, smoothing things over, and making empty promises, you are welcome to join. Otherwise, you will truly be miserable.

There is absolutely no sense of accomplishment after joining. Whatever you do seems to produce no results, and day after day, the only thing left to look forward to is collecting your paycheck.
