For example, only after taking a break was overtime application made available. The meal allowance system (NT$100 per day) was abolished, but in practice employees are limited to applying for only one hour of overtime per day (based on their salary ratio). The key issue is that not every employee’s application will be approved, which makes it feel as though there is another set of standards for reviewing overtime applications—perhaps involving a maximum number of people, or something similar. This undermines the original good intentions and does not address the reasons employees work overtime, such as uneven workloads and staff shortages. Perhaps this is an impact of the low profit margins in traditional industries, but employees hope for reasonable policies and an open, transparent explanation from management, rather than blindly forcing “harmony” and ignoring the issue. Those who hope the company will become increasingly harmonious and progressive should stay.
