Pros

1: Complies with the Labor Standards Act’s minimum basic wage. The monthly salary for new employees is approximately 23,000–24,000 (excluding overtime pay). The workday is 9 hours, including two 30-minute breaks (this 1 hour does not count toward overtime pay), but you may only rest inside the store and may not leave the premises, remaining under the company’s control.

2: Complies with the Labor Standards Act’s one fixed day off and one flexible rest day system.

3: There are opportunities for promotion.

Cons

1: Salaries are the lowest among all chain-operated or independently owned pet-service stores. The reason is that Gugu G’s workday is 9 hours, while most other stores require 10–12 hours per day. After adding overtime pay, salaries at other stores start at a minimum of 28,000.

2: The company controls the entire schedule. You may not take leave or switch shifts when unexpected matters arise. Only the store manager can schedule one day off on a Saturday or Sunday each week; store employees are not treated as people and are not allowed to take weekends off.

3: Promotion opportunities depend on your relationship with your supervisor (a head-office manager); work ability and promotion are not necessarily directly proportional.

4: Because this is a service industry, upon hiring you will be asked to sign a “leave-shift adjustment consent form.” This means you must fully cooperate with the company’s scheduling, including working on national holidays. The company does not need to calculate overtime pay for you, but will schedule another day off instead. When the Donghu store relocated, employees were once asked to help, but received only compensatory time off in exchange for the hours worked—and even that compensatory leave was not multiplied by 1.33.

5: Without a special reason, the company will not let you take two consecutive days off. To take two consecutive days off, you must use special leave (annual leave); you cannot arrange consecutive days off using a regular day off plus a rest day. Taking three or more consecutive days off also requires applying at least one month in advance.

6: For groomers, it is “clock in for work, but be responsible for yourself after clocking out.” Groomers do not receive overtime pay for working beyond their scheduled hours. The front desk will clock you out, and the company will say that you can receive substantial bonuses.

7: Employee health examinations are not provided every year; they are provided only in years when examinations are scheduled.

8: The three holiday bonuses are paid only for the Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival; there is no bonus for Lunar New Year. The company will say that it has replaced it with an annual year-end bonus.

9: The company’s so-called labor-management negotiations are decided by senior company managers themselves, after which store managers are asked to sign. Employees do not actually participate, and there is no union system—the company is both referee and player, making decisions directly.

10: The 0800 customer-service line is treated as supreme. Employees are expected to pursue the company’s greatest interests, but whenever a difficult customer calls the 0800 hotline to complain and make unreasonable demands, all the employees’ efforts go to waste.

11: You will be required to write down a schedule of two rest periods each day, allowing you to work 9 hours per day without being paid 1 hour of overtime.
