A self-important, disrespectful company that wastes job applicants’ time
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have both business and design backgrounds, but I previously worked in finance. I now want to switch to the design industry, and I am currently 31 years old.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The supervisor (presumably the owner) opened with: “You have no experience. Why would our staff have invited you to an interview?”
After looking through my portfolio, they continued: “You have no relevant experience, your work is not mature enough, and at your age, starting in the design industry is too late. Besides, you have no talent, working in design will be very difficult, and you are already 31. I do not recommend entering this field; you should go back to finance...”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before inviting me to the interview, this supervisor had not looked at my résumé or portfolio at all. Even if I was not personally invited by you, as the interviewer and the person responsible for the company, reviewing an applicant’s résumé and portfolio beforehand is basic respect for the applicant, isn’t it? On top of that, they blamed their subordinate for their own mistake and wasted the applicant’s time and transportation costs.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If interviewers do not review applicants’ résumés and work beforehand (there are many interviewers who do not look at the materials in advance), then applicants might as well stop writing résumés and posting their work online. We could just put our names and phone numbers on the job bank site. After all, you do not read all the information we provide anyway, do you?
The company requires applicants to learn about its background in advance, yet the company’s interviewer does not review applicants’ materials beforehand and acts as though they are superior. I do not believe a company like this would treat its employees well or offer good pay and benefits!
