Pros

Basically, you’re left to do as you please.

If there’s nothing to do, you can work on your own things.

As long as you’re not so excessive that your supervisor takes notice, it’s fine.

When I returned to the workplace, the atmosphere was harmonious, and colleagues didn’t scheme against one another.

Cons

Although the job listing says there are domestic and international trips every year,

in reality, there’s only a small chance of one every 3–5 years (the company only goes when it feels like it’s making money).

And the company only puts out a little over NT$100,000 to distribute among all employees (there are over 30 employees),

so employees basically have to pay the full cost of going abroad themselves.

It’s a laissez-faire work model that is both an advantage and a disadvantage.

If you happen to have a good supervisor and colleagues who are willing to teach you, that’s your good fortune.

Otherwise, you’ll have to figure everything out yourself until you’re exhausted.

The boss doesn’t even know the company’s core values,

and is constantly asking the employees below,

“What are the company’s core values?”

The funny thing is, most employees can’t live up to them either.

The boss is unable to lead employees toward the future.

Perhaps it’s also because of their age.

Even if they have foresight, they can’t keep up with the technological era.

They often can’t understand what employees are talking about,

or make employees repeatedly explain what was discussed in meetings (in very plain language).

They also don’t know how to select capable and talented people, and won’t choose competent employees.

They only choose incompetent old-timers who know how to curry favor and flatter.

So, naturally, any capable employees who can leave have all left.

Basically, it’s a sunset industry.

The department heads are all old-fashioned and quite old,

virtually just waiting for their pensions while clinging stubbornly to their positions.

They don’t help their subordinates fight for their department’s interests.

In meetings, departments that make money get to speak the loudest.

They often dump a pile of messes on the back-office departments,

causing the back-office workload to keep increasing until they can no longer cope.

Then the back-office supervisor has an extremely poor relationship with others, and even their subordinates dislike them.

And you still expect such a supervisor to help with anything?

Summary:

Suitable for people without goals: collect a fixed paycheck, or wait for the company to go bankrupt and receive severance pay.

(You might not even get that—the boss is very good at tax evasion and exploiting legal loopholes.)
