Pros

1. There is no boss standing nearby while you work, so if you finish your work quickly, you can take a break early.

2. There are many instruments, so there are many opportunities to learn.

Cons

1. The seniority system among colleagues is very strong. The most outrageous ones openly say that if you are inexperienced, you deserve to die, and make you keep running errands and driving. They are almost always resting while you do the work. If you do anything that displeases them or are not proactive enough, they will immediately report you to the boss, and you will not be asked to come back the next day. The boss trusts the team leaders very much.

2. Low starting pay and long working hours. You clock in at 6:30 a.m. and arrive in Mailiao before 8:00 a.m. for the morning meeting. The time in between is treated as transportation compensation at NT$170 per hour. After returning to the company, you still have to back up files and write a daily report. The clock-out time is close to 6:00 p.m. You often need to work overtime on holidays, and your overall salary can only be increased through overtime and transportation compensation.

3. New employees frequently encounter double standards. Because there is no SOP, there can be several different ways to conduct an inspection. Some veterans will tell you to work faster, while others will require you to be more precise. Their tone is never very good, and they will also curse at you using profanity.

4. Since the work environment is in Mailiao, the conditions are very poor. Formosa Plastics also has many rules and will impose fines or deductions of NT$3,000 to over NT$10,000 for the slightest issue. Their attitude toward contractors is very poor.

Conclusion: Setting aside the interpersonal relationships, the work itself is fairly ordinary, and operating the instruments is not particularly complicated. If you can stick it out, after two or three years your salary can reach around NT$50,000 (depending on overtime and the plant turnaround period). The colleagues are very young, mostly born between 1989 and 1994, and have a strong immature, “young punk” vibe. The colleagues inside say that the more capable technicians have all left. In my opinion, those who remain are not yet qualified to be called technicians. Sometimes I even question the accuracy of the test data.
