After submitting a résumé through a job-search website, I was contacted for an interview. The boss interviewed me in the morning, and the boss’s wife interviewed me again in the afternoon. I was then notified to start work the following week. It is a small company that cuts knives and cutting tools. When I went there, I saw only four employees: the boss, the boss’s wife, and two salespeople. The starting salary was 30,000, including a 2,000 full-attendance bonus. The main duties were to check, unpack, and put the goods delivered each day into inventory, as well as prepare the daily sales slips for the salespeople.
This is a small company, but the boss made it sound incredibly impressive, as if it were one of the top 100 companies. In addition, employees had to pay the shipping costs up front and then submit the receipts for reimbursement all at once on the 20th of each month. Also, the boss did not mention during the interview or on my first day that bags could not be brought into the company. It was only on my second day that he said bags were not allowed. The salespeople were allowed to bring theirs, and this rule had not been mentioned during the interview or on my first day. When I brought a bag, he asked what I was going to do with it and what was inside, saying that his things were very expensive—as if implying that I was a thief. Anyone considering working for this company should think twice.
