During the interview, they said the company culture was laid-back and that all the employees had been there for a long time. In reality, only one person had been there for a long time, because they could spend half an hour doing their makeup after clocking in and then go make a coffee, while you’d get chewed out for eating breakfast.

The machines are old, with second-hand gray-market equipment. Tools are missing here and there, and paper jams happen extremely frequently. There isn’t even a paper jogger, so you have to keep tapping the paper by hand until the end of time. The perfect-binding machine had been in use for over ten years, and it was only a few days ago that I found out it needed to be disassembled for maintenance.

There are no SOPs and no handovers. Things are made and left there without anyone telling you what to do with them or what the finished product should look like—you have to ask yourself; otherwise, you might as well cast divination blocks and try to communicate with spirits. The same thing is acceptable sometimes and unacceptable at other times; the standards change constantly and depend entirely on the mood at the time.

Things may be okay for a newcomer, but if the other person leaves, you’ll have to take on plant administration, production control, outside pickups and deliveries, QC, and, when business is bad, sales and maintaining customer relationships as well.

If you want to enter this industry, just find any other plant—it will be far better than this dump.
