The morning shift is paid hourly, but time under half an hour is not paid. They won’t tell you this during the interview—you only hear it from employees after you start. In other words, you have to finish the work before you can leave, but any time beyond the time they tell you to clock out is unpaid.
When I first started, I found out that three of the back-of-house staff were about to resign, while the remaining one said they would stay for at most another month. From their conversations, it seemed that everyone was very dissatisfied with the fact that overtime at this job is unpaid.
They often don’t tell you to clock out until 15–20 minutes after the hour, and you still have to finish the work. This already violates the Labor Standards Act.
Besides preparing ingredients, serving food, and cutting things, one person also has to wash all the dishes. In addition, every Monday you have to clean out the grease trap. It is a very deep pit, and only one person can kneel on the ground and bend down to slowly scoop out all the food scraps, garbage, and floating grease using a ladle. Then you have to rinse the inside of the gate with a hose. Be careful not to splash your face.
I have only been working here for my first month, and I already want to resign…
