The position was as a sales assistant, basically helping the supervisor carry out assigned tasks. The supervisor was also the owner’s wife.

During the interview, after discussing the job duties with me, the owner’s wife chatted at length, almost like two good friends casually talking in the break room, with no pressure at all. She decided on the spot to hire me and gave me one month to hand over my responsibilities at my previous job.

There was not much to do on the first day—just using the computer system to receive incoming goods. At first, I was unfamiliar with it and needed to memorize the item codes, but as long as you take thorough notes, it is basically no problem! Even without notes, the owner’s wife patiently repeated the instructions many times. During work, she did not keep a close eye on employees. If she saw that someone was busy, she would ask whether they needed help or suggest going outside the company for a walk, a drink of water, or some snacks.

The management philosophy of the owner and his wife is very simple: self-discipline, freedom, and comfort. Once employees have a certain level of independence in their positions, they are given 100% authority to complete their work. Even when mistakes occur, they are not excessively singled out or subjected to criticism.

The duties of a sales assistant vary depending on the individual’s situation, including system maintenance, receiving and shipping goods, sales, quotations, price inquiries, warehouse management, mail handling, assisting with accounting, customer service, and more. Work is assigned according to each person’s learning speed. Once the owner or his wife assigns a task and the employee becomes proficient, the employee handles it independently without interference. If difficulties arise, the owner or his wife will coordinate amicably. Basically, people who cannot self-manage are advised not to waste their time at this company. After all, a good working environment depends not only on the effort of the people in charge, but also on being jointly maintained by all employees.

Because I had to balance starting a business with taking care of my family and child, it was a great pity that I resigned at the end of January this year. It is hard to find a job where, if your child has a fever, you can bring them from home or kindergarten to the company to look after them. As long as you are self-disciplined and complete your work on time, you can even memorize some English vocabulary or browse your phone. Unlike at a factory, these are very lenient conditions—and there is air conditioning. It was pretty great.

Because the relationships among colleagues are so close, the atmosphere at work is usually quite lively. Several colleagues like telling jokes, which can make it difficult to concentrate on work. Also, when engineering projects get busy, the technicians can still lose their tempers. As long as everyone is tolerant of one another, it is not much of a problem!

The company has a serious food-related problem: the snacks in the break room never seem to run out. The owner and his wife often treat employees to meals, afternoon tea, drinks, and so on. During employees’ birthday months, the birthday person can even choose a cake. People who are afraid of gaining weight are advised not to waste their time applying.

The office for internal staff is next to the factory/warehouse. Occasionally, there may be a rubber adhesive smell from crimping hoses, as well as an oily odor. The indoor and outdoor areas are separated, so the pungent smells and discomfort generally do not have much impact.
