Pros

The original base salary was NT$28,590. Because I asked for a higher salary, it was still cut down to NT$29,500. There is no perfect-attendance bonus, but there is an annual bonus, bonuses for the three major holidays, and quarterly bonuses.

The work environment is basically a traditional-manufacturing factory, so the floor near the machines is very oily and slippery. Most people change into chef shoes. The quality-inspection workplace is in an office, so it is less oily.

You can order boxed lunches together at noon. The boss says the boxed lunches are quite tasty, but I personally did not think they were very good. Meal costs are also deducted—NT$400 per month, fluctuating according to the price of the boxed lunches.

Cons

As long as you are young and can accept boring, repetitive work and the low salary offered by the boss, you can basically get hired, because the boss does not want to hire older people. However, I feel that this job causes significant occupational strain. After doing it for a few days, my eyes felt very tired, since you have to look at reflective metal all day. The table is high and the chair is low, so the posture required for the job is awkward and causes shoulder and neck pain. I noticed signs of hunching in several coworkers. Most importantly, there is no toilet paper in the restroom, so you have to bring your own!

The lunch boxes are not very tasty. After just two days, I saw a hair in one. I also heard coworkers tell quite a few horror stories about different boxed-lunch shops, such as finding cockroaches and spiders in the food. Even when they switch suppliers, they keep ordering from the same few places. Also, the quality-inspection office is very noisy, with coworkers talking loudly. I really do not want to know what everyone’s children are doing every day. There is a long string of swear words in almost every sentence, and having my ears bombarded with profanity for eight or nine hours every day is extremely painful...
