Pros

You can play free mahjong, and the employees support one another—except for one sycophant.

Cons

A typical exploitative boss. On PTT, he pretended to be a saint, saying that starting a business was difficult, yet he paid full-time employees a salary of only NT$28,000. In reality, among more than ten employees, only two received NT$28,000: one was his sycophant, and the other was the store manager. The assistant manager worked extremely hard but earned less than NT$15,000 a month, and he also delayed salary payments every month. The posts on PTT where he praised himself are still online. He likes to sow discord.

Oh, and he is also a litigious bully who likes to threaten young part-time workers by saying, “Be careful, I’ll sue you.” When I left the job, he even had an administrative document demanding that I compensate him more than NT$10,000 for allegedly violating the Labor Standards Act by resigning without sufficient advance notice. Yet he still had not paid me the overtime wages for working from the first through the seventh day of the 2015 Lunar New Year, which together with that month’s salary amounted to more than NT$20,000. Why couldn’t I collect it? Because this boss never provided pay slips, and would repeatedly fob us off with excuses such as the company’s startup funds being unstable. The company has since gone under; I don’t know whether he will make a comeback and start another company, but I still occasionally hear about him suing other people.

He used to be a volunteer police officer and liked to use that status to cultivate connections with the police, thinking his relationships were very strong. However, after his behavior of randomly filing lawsuits against people reached the ears of the captain of the volunteer police brigade, he was investigated and then kicked out.

There was a Maitreya Buddha statue on the front desk. At one meeting, he said: “Don’t think I don’t know what you say or do. I’m telling you, even Maitreya Buddha will tell me, so you’d better be careful.” Little did he know that, at the time, we had set up a scheme to identify the sycophant among the employees. Several more senior employees deliberately circulated different versions of gossip among everyone to see which version and which matter would reach the exploitative boss. Because of his statement that Maitreya Buddha would tell him everything, that sycophant employee was thereafter nicknamed “Maitreya Buddha.” It was no wonder that this sycophant always received his salary on time, and that his pay was the same as the store manager’s.

The people who had worked hard to help him start the business were gradually driven away by his disgusting tactics, one after another, in less than a year. He had countless petty tricks. They earned only a little over NT$10,000 a month and could not even receive their salaries on time. To reduce labor costs, he kept finding ways to cut working hours. One employee who held the title of assistant manager had a pile of responsibilities but was given so few shifts that they earned less than NT$15,000 a month.

Regular customers knew what he was like and how he treated people. When long-term employees were driven away one by one, some customers even confronted him directly. The videos or audio recordings are still preserved. Regular customers asked him, one matter after another, without using profanity; he became red-faced and flustered, yet was unable to explain himself or say anything in response. His character was plain to see.

He operated a venue for two years in the basement of a mountain community, yet did not pay a single cent in management fees. I’ve forgotten how much he owed.

In short, there are many ridiculous things about this person...
