Pros

The colleagues are great; most of them are junior and young. There is a strong sense of shared hardship from building a startup together.

The company’s location is good.

Cons

The bosses disregard the authority of the managers below them. What appears to be macro-management is actually extremely micromanaged: they hire whoever they want whenever they want, completely ignoring the managers’ opinions and failing to discuss matters with them beforehand. If you are applying for a management position, you need to be mentally prepared.

An even more bizarre aspect is that none of the bosses has much actual work experience at other companies, and they are also very young (29/33), so they act recklessly and are very self-righteous. This is especially true on the engineering side. Everyone there, including the C-level executives, has little experience. If you want to work there as a senior engineer, I suggest you first win over the C-level executives if you want any chance of surviving.

When you first join, they may think you are the talent they want, but after a few weeks they may decide that you are not what they imagined. They will then start engaging in the behavior described above to drive you out or sideline you. Moreover, when you have doubts about your work situation and try to discuss them with them face-to-face, they instead may think you are causing trouble or that you do not welcome newcomers, and use the absurd “the bad person complains first” tactic to tell you that your attitude is poor. Even if they have issues with the way you work, when you ask them directly, they will not respond.

The most disgusting part is that the boss acts as if they are your friend, but there is always a hidden agenda behind the smile. When they dismiss you without legitimate reason, if you try to discuss the problem with them face-to-face or request reasonable severance pay, you will be kept out and refused access.

Final recommendation: Senior engineers and marketing manager-level applicants should think twice. Customer service staff may consider joining, but the organization is very chaotic (because the bosses responsible for the technical side also meddle in customer service).

One-sentence summary: A company that is impressive on the outside but rotten within.
