Cons

Because it is a family business—a small company—after joining, you must help with the family’s private matters. In addition to regular work, you are also expected to help look after the children (there were two elementary school students at the time). You cannot leave work until the children’s parents return home.

The elderly lady boss constantly uses her poor health to drain your conscience. By the end, you do not even know whether you should continue helping. If you help, you are on call 24 hours a day; if you do not, they accuse you of being ungrateful (although I do not know what I supposedly owe you for).

At this company, in order to claim payment in lieu of my unused annual leave, I even had to resign and apply for mediation through the Labor Bureau. They insisted on making employees go this far before agreeing to comply with some Labor Standards Act requirements. Their eldest son and the elderly lady boss (the eldest son’s mother) both think their family is superior to everyone else, so if you say anything they do not like, be prepared to be yelled at.

I had always thought that things would be different after the eldest son returned from a large company and introduced new systems. Instead, he set up another branch and added a pile of unreasonable duties. I did not mind doing private errands for them during working hours, but they could not expect me to continue handling private matters after work. The worst part was their extremely bad attitude—they even implied that I would be responsible if something happened to the children. Are people really this unreasonable when they are the children’s parents, or even their grandmother?

Anyway, if you want to give it a try, go ahead and interview. You can experience a different kind of work; perhaps it is what you are looking for.
