Pros

The boss is very warm and considerate of employees’ physical well-being. A staff meal is provided during work, and employees can drink beverages from the shop. Fruit and snacks are also provided. Employees are asked not to stand for too long and to take breaks as needed. Hot water is available when washing dishes.

The workday is 8.5 hours, minus a 0.5-hour break, for 8 working hours in total. The earliest start time is 11:00 AM.

Cons

The first floor has never opened on time. Every day, in addition to handling the coffee shop’s tasks, you also have to help appease customers who arrived only to find it closed.

The time clock gradually runs faster, so pay attention to the time difference and remind the boss to recalibrate it.

The shop uses a capsule coffee machine, so there is no latte art. A manual milk frother is used, and the milk for hot lattes is heated in a microwave.

The shop’s audio equipment is old-fashioned: an outdated CD stereo. After one disc finishes, you have to manually replace it with the next one. Only CDs already available in the shop can be played, and the boss requires that, no matter how busy it is, the same disc must not be played twice in a row. Music selections must also be made according to the customers’ psychological states at the time (even the coasters must be chosen based on the customers’ feelings—there is no such thing as selecting them randomly or simply grabbing one and using it).

The shop has wall-mounted plants that need to be watered every day. They are also a breeding source for mosquitoes, so every day you have to battle them with an electric mosquito swatter—but only when no customers are present. When customers are there, using the electric swatter to kill mosquitoes is forbidden.

There is no written SOP, including for beverage preparation, food preparation, how to use vouchers, or how to respond when there are many customers.

Everything is communicated and explained verbally. When making beverages, there are no measuring cups or other precise instruments; everything is based on feel and visual estimation. Occasionally, the boss adds ingredients that are not included in the SOP for that beverage.

If you are a customer and are allergic to certain things, you must, absolutely and without fail, inform the staff.

If you are an employee, recording the boss’s explanations can help prevent various contingencies—for example, if the boss does not remember having explained a rule.

As an employee, you are the messenger between the two bosses. Even if the two bosses do not get along, you still have to act as that messenger.

The boss has a very sensitive nose. If you tend to sweat easily, please be mentally prepared.

As long as you do not upset the boss, you can successfully keep this job. However, the moment the boss is unhappy, you are out—even if customers are very satisfied with your service.

As for how to make the boss happy, you only need to keep agreeing with and obeying her viewpoints. Regardless of what practical experience you have, it is basically unnecessary. She only recognizes her own experience and service methods. Once your opinion differs from hers, you are more or less out.
