A waste of the job applicant’s time!
My reply through the job bank had already clearly stated that I had no relevant work experience, but was willing to give it a try. If the company was willing to consider me, I asked them to notify me by phone for an interview. During the phone call, I again stated that I had no experience or relevant background. The person who called simply said, “No problem, come in and have a chat.”
When I got there, they immediately asked whether I had any relevant experience, which made no sense to me at the time.
They then started going over my résumé on repeat, talking about what their company had done and how great it was that they had taken graphic-design classes at Mastercam. They also said that their English used to be poor but was now pretty good. Then they brought up China’s sharing economy and said things that were supposedly going to make me jump, or something along those lines. After listening to it, I really was shocked—but only because what they said was just common knowledge. There was absolutely nothing surprising about it.
In the end, they said, “Thank you for coming in to chat. Consider this (the sharing-economy story) a gift for you,” and sent me on my way.
I repeatedly emphasized from the beginning that I had no experience but wanted to give it a try, precisely to avoid wasting both sides’ time. Yet it still turned out this way. I’m truly speechless. If you think you have plenty of time and want to hear lots of things that will supposedly shock you, I suggest trying an interview at this company.
