At the beginning, the interview only involved briefly asking about a few things; they did not even look at my portfolio.
Then I was given a typesetting test on a computer.
After I passed all of that, I started work.
The company was very small, with basically only a passageway wide enough for one person to pass through, and two dogs would lie in the passageway.
The two dogs were their precious babies, so they could not be pushed with a cart or stepped on.
The entire company had been converted from the boss’s old home, so the restroom was very old and small.
The water dispenser had a strange smell.
You had to bring your own toilet paper.
The office space was extremely small and crowded, and I would often bump into the drawers behind me.
The person training me was extremely busy; basically, he was the only one responsible for the design work.
As a result, he could not train me, and there were no design drafts for me to work on. I could only fold paper boxes.
When assigning design work, they did not say how long it needed to take. Since I thought there was no rush, I would take about 30 minutes to submit a simple draft.
The sales staff and the boss’s wife also did not mention that my design work was too slow or raise any other concerns.
I spent a day adjusting.
However, as soon as I started, I was assigned to do a thorough cleaning and spent the entire day cleaning.
Then, because the designer was too busy to assign me any work, I spent another day folding paper boxes.
I worked on a few drafts here and there.
In the end, I started work on Monday and was dismissed on Friday for being too slow. I only found out at the moment I was getting off work.
I was given absolutely no prior notice.
The boss’s wife and the sales staff are mother and daughter. They chat all day, although I do not know what they talk about after work.
The female owner doesn’t want people to work overtime and generally hopes everyone finishes their work early, but if a customer has an urgent order, you still have to complete it that same day.
The sales staff don’t need to travel outside, but they do have to make sales calls.
The year-end bonus is at least one month’s salary (calculated based on the base salary).
There is no overtime pay. If the graphic design or printing work contains errors, you have to pay for them yourself. Once your salary is set, it usually will not be adjusted again. The workspace is cramped, and rats and cockroaches sometimes appear. You have to bring your own toilet paper. The female owner and the sales staff love chatting during work hours and also enjoy gossiping about people behind their backs: today they secretly bad-mouth you, and tomorrow they bad-mouth someone else, while actually thinking we don’t know… The male owner likes to flirt with women, although for now he hasn’t gone so far as to target employees, but you should still be careful. The company is small and probably won’t grow much. If you want to make long-term plans, you may want to consider another company.
