Pros

1. The boss and his wife occasionally go on business trips, so you can have the office to yourself.

2. Sometimes the boss’s wife gives you fruit.

Cons

1. The boss and his wife make a ton of money, own several houses, and frequently send money to their daughter overseas, but they pay their employees extremely little.

1-1. The pay is truly extremely low; coworkers who have worked there for more than three years earn less than 40K.

1-2. Coworkers’ ways of thinking can sometimes be a little strange (but they are good people).

2. They tell you right from the start that it is a “responsibility-based” position (30K and you’re talking to me about responsibility???), with no overtime pay.

3. You do not clock in or out, and there are no attendance records.

3-1. Because there is no clocking-in system, leave is not handled according to labor regulations: there is no annual leave and no personal or sick leave. To take leave, you simply tell the boss’s wife, but she will ask you about the reason in minute detail; then she will ask again when you return from leave.

3-2. Following from the previous point, the boss’s wife likes prying into people’s privacy (possibly a common trait among older people?).

3-3. During the interview, she repeatedly asks about your family: who you live with and every family member’s occupation. After you start working, she continues asking, even showing concern about whether you plan to go home to visit family during long weekends.

4. You have to work 15–30 minutes of overtime every day. If you leave on time, the boss’s wife will ask, “Do you have something to do after work today?”

5. The boss and his wife occasionally travel together for business. When they are away, they love calling the office to give you tasks. The record is 13 calls in one morning (the two of them like to take turns calling).

6. They are extremely afraid of employees having nothing to do, so when they travel, they call repeatedly to assign you completely unimportant, time-wasting tasks.

7. They are incredibly stingy. Almost everything in the office is used for an extremely long time, and you are not allowed to throw things away (even if they look exactly like dust-covered garbage). The stationery is terrible: even when pens run dry, they will not buy new ones, and the scissors cannot even cut paper properly.

8. There is no large printer, only a home printer, but sometimes you have to scan or photocopy large quantities of documents (it will drive you crazy).

9. They are incredibly stingy. If you print something they consider unimportant, fail to print double-sided, or do not reuse scrap paper, you will be lectured.

10. To photocopy large quantities of documents, you have to go to a very distant place (about a 20-minute scooter ride), because the boss’s wife says that place is the cheapest.

11. Things are often put off until the last minute, followed by constant rushing and a very bad attitude (even though they could have been done earlier).

12. The boss and his wife are quite emotional; when they are in a bad mood, their tone becomes very unpleasant.

13. You have to book flights for their daughter to return to Taiwan and travel abroad (their daughter is an adult and works overseas on her own). The flight times are constantly changed (sometimes the daughter contacts you directly to tell you which flight to buy).

14. You have to handle matters concerning their home (calling plumbers and electricians, replacing filters, and so on).

15. They will keep lying to you, saying that they are going to retire and hand the business over to you (in reality, they want you to stay by clinging to hope while working for low pay as a corporate drone).

16. There are surveillance cameras everywhere in the office, and the boss and his wife can monitor them remotely from their phones at any time.

17. Instructions are often unclear, and when you try to clarify them, their tone may become unpleasant.

18. Files from previous years are a complete mess. Occasionally, you will need to search like looking for a needle in a haystack, as the boss’s wife may instruct you to find some document from five or ten years ago.

19. Unless you are truly out of options, do not choose this company.
