Pros

The working hours are very good: 09:30–18:30

Lunch and snacks are provided (but there aren’t many).

Cons

The school laid out a plan for me.

The stated development goal was that new teachers could progress from teaching lower grades to teaching middle grades, but after joining, I discovered that this was simply because there was a shortage of lower-grade teachers.

There was also another new middle-grade teacher that year, but she had no experience at all.

Pros

1. The colleagues get along well, and there is usually plenty of personal time to do what you want. The lesson content can also be adjusted according to your preferences.

2. If you are capable of managing the class well, you can lie down and sleep during lunch break, sometimes for a full hour.

3. If you need to arrive late that day, you only need to tell your supervisor, and you can make up the time using compensatory leave.

(The compensatory leave hours come from working overtime on Saturdays or working overtime for events.)

4. Working hours are 09:30–18:30.

On duty, they last until 19:00.

5. The students generally have good English skills, so they are fairly easy to teach and get used to. It is also less common to encounter parents who are difficult to communicate with; they are generally very polite.

Cons

1. During the winter and summer vacations, you are forced to take unpaid leave. If you do not want to suspend your labor and health insurance, you have to pay the premiums yourself.

2. Arriving late during working hours results in a salary deduction. There is no overtime pay; you can only receive compensatory leave hours.

3. Taking leave during the semester is prohibited. If you need to take leave, you will be given a hard time. Only people who stand firm can successfully get leave approved, and they may be resented for a long time afterward.

4. Basically, you have to learn and improve on your own. No one trains you, so you have to teach yourself. The once-a-week teacher training can help you improve if you take it seriously, but it is often canceled.

5. You are often required to support the work of the early childhood division, which takes time away from your own work.

6. Some foreign teachers have a habit of taking leave, so local teachers have to substitute for their classes. However, the school does not pay the local teachers the foreign teachers’ hourly rate. The workload doubles, and the school does not seem to feel any need to apologize.

7. The snacks provided to the children are average in quality and small in quantity. The children often complain that there is not enough. Even when parents and teachers report this, the school only asks the teachers to coordinate with the parents themselves.

8. Salaries are adjusted once a year, by less than 1,000 each time. You may not necessarily receive a salary during the winter and summer vacations. The year-end bonus is only one month’s salary. Not everyone receives a red envelope at the year-end banquet; you have to draw lots, and the largest envelope is 1,000, with only two people receiving it.

9. The school charges fairly high tuition, and it receives kickbacks when children subscribe to goat milk, but it does not distribute these profits to employees.

10. If you are someone with a lot of ideas, this is not a suitable place for you. It is suitable for people who are obedient. The school’s way of dealing with people who have their own ideas is to belittle them verbally. The school does not want talent; it wants yes-men. There have previously been colleagues with this kind of subservient personality who, despite having numerous problems managing their classes, were still rehired by the school. Therefore, if you are good at reading the situation, giving praise, and obeying your supervisors, you will fit in well here.

Pros

The colleagues seem like really nice people. When I arrived on campus, I saw that the colleagues had a close relationship. Many of them were chatting and joking around together, and the atmosphere felt very happy.

Cons

During the interview, I had a very pleasant conversation with the interviewers.

At the end, I spoke with the principal. When asked whether I had any questions,

I said that I wanted to learn more about promotion opportunities.

I was immediately lectured.

The principal said:

“There are currently many talented people within the school. You’ve only just come for an interview, and asking this question already is very disrespectful.

You should work here first and demonstrate your abilities before bringing this up.”

The principal’s attitude then changed and became much less friendly.

It was very different from the beginning of the conversation.

I was startled and thought I had asked something I shouldn’t have.

However, after interviewing at other schools, I discovered that they all clearly explained their transparent promotion pathways.
