I dreamed of a rear garden.
Inside were two empress dowagers, ruling from behind a curtain.
Each empress dowager had her own favorites, so long as they did not interfere with her authority.
Other than that, everyone could live out their days in peace.
There was also a regent who was always bleary-eyed.
He was gentle and scholarly, yet constantly had to accommodate the empress dowagers.
The empress dowagers had indeed achieved great things,
and they also knew how to play chess;
however, toward the new consorts who had recently arrived in the rear garden,
or the more senior noble ladies,
or even the empresses and emperors,
they still could not open their hearts.
The garden also had ministers who had served the empress dowagers for many years,
as well as a head palace maid who was quite popular with them;
their status surpassed that of the consorts and noble ladies in the rear garden.
Watching the rear garden’s prosperity and decline,
watching the princes work themselves to the bone,
regardless of their youth or the ravages of time,
there was one prince I especially worried about.
I wonder whether he is doing all right in the rear garden?
The rear garden has never been a place that ordinary people could bear.
So I waved my sleeve,
without taking away a single cloud,
or a speck of dust.
I awoke from the dream and returned to 2020,
continuing to look for work and wondering why I wanted to pass the bar exam.
