Pros

The HR staff are very nice. They take the time to talk with you seriously, come in to tell you who you’ll be interviewing with in the next round, and let you know if you need to wait because the manager is in a meeting. They’ll also discuss and communicate with you about issues related to the department.

Cons

The managers at this company seem to have some issues with decision-making. I’ll take some time to write about this very strange interview journey.

0704 First interview. I was originally interviewing for a senior test engineer position, but because the department had no manager, I also discussed the managerial position. I felt the interview process went fairly well. Later, the manager thought my English test score wasn’t good enough, so I went home, assuming there probably wouldn’t be any further developments.

After that, the company never responded with the result of their consideration. I proactively called every week to ask about the outcome, and HR politely said that the manager was still considering it.

0805 I received a thank-you letter from the company. I thought, “All right, I can finally put this unresolved matter behind me.”

0820 I received a call from another HR representative at the company, who said that the manager had previously been very impressed with my experience and abilities during the interview, and wanted to ask whether I was still interested in the position???? I was very confused and asked why they had sent me a thank-you letter two weeks earlier. Did they not recognize my experience and abilities at that time? The answer from HR really made me start feeling negatively about this company. HR’s response was: They thought a certain senior employee in the department might be unstable and might resign, so they wanted to ask whether I was still interested.

This was really uncomfortable and made me feel disrespected.

Since I really needed to find a job, and was also very interested in the company’s products and the job responsibilities, I agreed to arrange another interview after the general manager returned from abroad. Then things became even more interesting: after the general manager returned, the company repeatedly postponed scheduling the interview, repeatedly delaying it on the grounds that they had found many other people to interview. (They never proactively called to inform me; I always had to call myself to ask about the progress.) Then, there was still no news all the way through the end of September.

If this company were genuinely sincere about dealing with applicants, I don’t think it would handle things this way. Things should be handled with mutual respect. Whether or not to hire someone is a company decision, but whether or not to respect people is the attitude a company should show applicants.

Pros

The HR staff were very kind and made some small talk. They came in to tell you who you would be interviewing with in the next round, and if the manager was in a meeting and needed you to wait, they would let you know as well.

The tests covered English, logic, and aptitude. There were not many questions, and they were basically not difficult either—easy to complete.

The company building is quite beautiful and very clean, right on the front row along the Keelung River.

Cons

There are quite a few interview rounds, which is a bit tiring:

HR, the direct manager, the first-level manager, and the HR manager.

HR said that you would only proceed to the next round if the manager in each round thought you were acceptable.

However, HR would do their best to arrange the schedule so that everything could be completed on the same day, avoiding the need to make another trip.
