You really shouldn’t work for this company. It’s a typical family business—the company is basically their family’s domain.

The accounting and finance department is full of relatives and favorites. If you accidentally upset anyone, they’ll spread the word about you everywhere, making it difficult to get things done afterward. Some of the long-time employees have very bad tempers and are the type to yell. If you leave work on time, some of them will even help publicize it.

There’s also an assistant manager who seems not to do anything all day. Every time I see him, he’s smoking; he even disappears halfway through meetings. Perhaps he usually doesn’t perform very well, so he thinks that pointing out and widely publicizing a colleague’s minor numerical error makes him look capable and shows that he’s doing something. In fact, everyone knows what he’s up to.

With a few years of experience at an accounting firm, you can coast along there and bluff the older employees into believing almost anything. You also need to know how to argue; otherwise, you’ll be completely steamrolled by older employees whose educational backgrounds are anyone’s guess. A very unusual company.

There are many well-connected people inside—otherwise they’re the boss’s relatives, or their neighbors, friends, and so on. Also, watch out for the chubby female product designer in the Finance Department. Why would there be a chubby girl doing product design in the Finance Department? That’s certainly something to ponder. Anyway, don’t offend the well-connected people there, haha~

I’m not saying that chubby girls don’t have a finance background—only a _____ background. She’ll order people across departments to prepare additional analytical reports for her; if they don’t comply, they’ll be ____ because they’re all one harmonious big family. Of course, nothing like that really happens at the company~

A place to retire.

If you’re considering going overseas, think twice. Overseas positions only offer subsidies and allowances—just NT$600–700 per day—and the other bonuses are also lower than those in Taiwan. There is no annual leave either!! I really don’t understand where the boss’s conscience is. The working hours overseas are also long, and you still have to work on Saturdays. Overall, the compensation is not better by comparison.

Salaries in Taiwan are already low. It’s the same base-salary system, with the rest made up through bonuses. Many of the positions above prefer to hire part-time or temporary workers; those without connections basically have a hard time getting promoted. Fortunately, I left early~ If you’re thinking of going to mainland China to seek career development, don’t consider it.
