Pretty much anyone can get hired, right? The legendary beginner training camp for environmental workers. To the project manager, engineers are like disposable chopsticks, because with that salary, staying on really is impossible. A single person can barely make ends meet; those with families can’t cover their expenses at all. Women do office work and have endless permits to review, while men have to do fieldwork, enter data when they return, and assist with basic permit reviews. Even with three heads and six arms, it’s hard to avoid overtime. Basically, you’re a little helper for civil servants (a little slave?). Within two years, 99% of the unit’s members will have been replaced—the turnover is so fast that civil servants resign before they’ve even memorized your name.
You can learn things, but you pay for them with your life, health, and quality of life.
There is an overwhelming amount of work. I frequently have to work overtime until 10:30 p.m., and sometimes I do not get off work until 1 a.m. the next day. This includes consecutive overtime shifts requiring work on Saturdays and Sundays; the longest stretch was 21 days.
Even when I am working overtime to the point of nearly collapsing, the manager still criticizes us, saying, “I can’t feel your enthusiasm for the work.”
The manager also often sets extremely tight deadlines for reports. For example, you may be given only one week to write a final report, while during that same period you also have to write the monthly report, attend other meetings, and support other teams in organizing events. As a result, you have to work overtime until 10:30 p.m. every weekday, and you also have to work overtime every Saturday and Sunday; otherwise, you cannot finish everything.
There are also many times when temporary assignments are given right before the end of the workday, with the instruction that they must be completed before you leave. This makes them impossible to finish without working overtime. Sometimes they are assigned so late that there is not even enough time to submit an overtime request, so the extra work is effectively donated to the company for free.
For overtime applications, at most four hours are approved; any additional hours are donated to the company. Moreover, there is no overtime pay, and employees are forced to choose compensatory leave instead. In reality, it is impossible to use all of it.
If you’re assigned to a project with the Air Quality Division of the Changhua County Environmental Protection Bureau:
The division chief is a typical exploitative boss and highly emotional.
They treat the consulting company like servants.
Don’t go!
