At the beginning, the person who interviewed me did not even introduce herself. She kept her arms crossed over her chest throughout the entire interview and had an aloof, condescending attitude, which made me very uncomfortable. I applied for the position of Reservations Specialist, but half of the job duties were not related to reservations; most involved supporting revenue management. Although the job posting did not mention any responsibilities beyond reservations, I was not opposed to learning other things—I only stated that I was unwilling to do fieldwork or sales.
After the interview, she said that HR would explain the company benefits. I waited for 40 minutes but no one came⋯ I finally knocked on the HR door. Two HR staff members were chatting, and they looked surprised to see me. Only then did I find out that HR thought I had already finished the interview and left??!
After HR arrived, they said they had been told that I only wanted to do reservations work, so I did not meet their needs. But!! That was absolutely not what I had said. How could they twist my meaning like that? I said that I did not want to do sales or fieldwork, but I never said that I only wanted to do reservations. Internal communication at the company is extremely problematic: one person said to find HR, while HR thought the candidate had already left. On top of that, things I never said were treated as fact. When HR came to interview me, they also questioned my attitude and spoke in an displeased tone.
Summary:
1. The job duties were extremely inconsistent with the job posting.
2. Internal communication was very poor.
3. What you say and what the listener thinks you mean may differ by an enormous amount.
4. Even when treated unreasonably, you cannot show it, because the other party may criticize you for having a very bad attitude.
